Goldfinches Starting to Ripen

by Melanie and Jim

This is a welcome sight and sound. The American Goldfinches Spinus tristis are beginning to molt and show their bright plummage. This fellow sat just long enough outside our back window to get a short video. The rain and molt make him look a bit scruffy.

Nice. Unfortunately, we have taken down the thistle feeder (the regular will come down when we run out of seed) to avoid attracting bears. We will miss the burst of gold as they get their summer plumage.

Well, it’s nice to know that some have arrived up north. They disappeared from here about 3-4 weeks ago, and I miss their chittering. On the other hand, the swallows are back, and they’re lovely, too. Every season has its treat. (Besides, we only get to see the goldfinches in their winter drab. Lucky you to see them gold!)
