Cardinal | Color and Song

Beautiful weather, cloudless skies, and singing birds have been the theme lately. One song stands out loud and clear. The Northern Cardinal, Cardinalis cardinalis, pierces the air with its call. Bright red males light up the high branches as they patrol their territories.

I moved to get a better view. He was unconcerned that I was not far away. It seems he posed.

He cocked back his head and started singing . Listen here for a good example.

Great pictures. We see them at our house and in our area all the time. But they don’t hold still long enough to be able to see the details!

I brought back some photos of one from the Brazos river yesterday, but dumped them all. He just wasn’t in focus — partly because he kept flitting from one limb to another and I couldn’t keep up with him. I need to figure out what the “live view” setting on the camera might be. Maybe it would help in such circumstances.

I have heard one singing recently. I can’t find him, but it’s unusual to have them around. It’s just not their preferred territory. You’re lucky.

That’s too bad. They normally aren’t cooperative. Most birds aren’t. Camera settings might not help either.

We are lucky to have them around. Their bright reds in the morning sun are beautiful.
